National Remembrance Day PNG Holiday 2017

Date:
Monday, July 24, 2017

Papua New Guinea National Remembrance Day is the memorial observed to remember the members of PNG armed forces who have died on duty in World War I, World War II, and in general peace keeping and law and order engagements within PNG and abroad.

The date of July 23 was chosen to commemorate the First Battle of Kokoda that occurred during the New Guinea campaign of the Pacific War.

The battle was fought between Allied (primarily Australian) and invading Japanese forces in the territory of Papua.

It took place on July 23, 1942.
